What Is a Dinosaur Fossil Dig Tuff Tray?

A Dinosaur Fossil Dig Tuff Tray is a sensory play setup where children search for hidden dinosaur fossils buried beneath sand or sensory filler.

Using printable dinosaur fossil pieces, children can pretend to become real paleontologists as they dig, brush, scoop, and uncover dinosaur bones hidden inside the tray.

The activity is open-ended, which means children can explore and play in their own unique way. Some children may carefully excavate fossils, while others may create dinosaur habitats and imaginative small world scenes.

Why Use a Tuff Tray for Dinosaur Play?

A Tuff Tray creates the perfect contained play space for messy sensory activities.

The large surface area gives children plenty of room to dig, scoop, and explore while helping keep the sand contained in one place. It also allows multiple children to play together, encouraging communication and collaborative play. Unlike structured worksheets or teacher-led tasks, sensory play allows children to follow their own ideas, make discoveries independently, and stay engaged for long periods of time. Most importantly, it makes learning feel exciting and meaningful.

Materials Needed for Your Dinosaur Tuff Tray

One of the best things about this activity is how easy it is to set up.

You will need:

A Tuff Tray or sensory tray
Sand
Printable dinosaur fossil cut-outs
Small brushes or paintbrushes
Scoops, spoons, or digging tools
Toy dinosaurs (optional)
Small rocks, shells, or loose parts (optional)

Simply print and cut out the dinosaur fossil pieces, place them inside the tray, and lightly cover them with sand. Children can then begin excavating the fossils just like real dinosaur explorers.

Benefits of Dinosaur Tuff Tray Play

Supports Fine Motor Skills

Scooping sand, brushing fossils, and digging carefully all help strengthen the small muscles in children's hands and fingers.

These movements support important early skills needed for writing, cutting, and self-care tasks.

Encourages Imaginative Play

Children love creating stories around dinosaurs.

A fossil dig Tuff Tray can quickly transform into a prehistoric world full of volcanoes, dinosaur habitats, and adventure.

Promotes Language Development

During play, children naturally begin asking questions and describing their discoveries.

Provides Calming Sensory Input

Sand play can feel calming and regulating for many children.

The repetitive motions of pouring, digging, scooping, and brushing can help children focus and engage deeply in play.

More Ways to Use the T Rex Fossil Printable

Child's hand building T-Rex dinosaur skeleton with salt dough on a printable template.

1. Salt Dough or Play Dough Fossil Activity

Turn the T Rex fossil page into a hands-on dinosaur bones activity by adding salt dough or play dough on top of the fossil lines.

Children can roll, pinch, press, and shape the dough to cover each bone on the dinosaur skeleton. This is a great fine motor activity because children are using their fingers to build the bones while also noticing the different shapes that make up the fossil.

You can use regular play dough for a quick setup, or make salt dough if you want a more realistic fossil-making experience.

Basic Salt Dough Recipe

You will need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Slowly add the water and mix until a dough forms. If it feels too sticky, add a little more flour. If it feels too dry, add a tiny bit more water.

Children can press the salt dough onto the T Rex fossil page to build the dinosaur skeleton. For longer use, laminate the fossil page first or place it inside a clear dry-erase pocket.

2. Light Table Fossil Exploration

Child's finger points to T-Rex skeleton on light table.

You can also place the T Rex fossil page on a light table or light pad for a simple light table exploration activity.

The bright surface helps the dinosaur skeleton stand out, making it fun for children to trace the fossil bones with their finger. They can follow the rib bones, tail bones, skull, legs, and tiny arms while exploring the shape of the dinosaur.

This is a calm, low-prep activity that works well for:

  • Fine motor practice
  • Visual tracking
  • Dinosaur theme activities
  • Science centers
  • Sensory play
  • Quiet morning work
  • Paleontologist pretend play

Children can trace the bones with their finger, use a dry-erase marker on a laminated page, or place loose parts on top of the skeleton to build the fossil.
